What a Coordinate Really Measures
In space the three coordinate planes are the YZ-plane (), the ZX-plane () and the XY-plane (). For a point , each coordinate records how far is from one of these planes:
- The -coordinate is the perpendicular distance of from the YZ-plane, marked off along the -axis.
- The -coordinate is the perpendicular distance of from the ZX-plane, marked off along the -axis.
- The -coordinate is the perpendicular distance of from the XY-plane, marked off along the -axis.
