Educational Towns

Educational towns begin as centres of learning, but over time they can grow into much larger settlements known as campus towns. The textbook gives five clear examples: Roorkee, Varanasi, Aligarh, Pilani, and Prayagraj.

What makes these towns distinct is that their entire identity and growth are tied to education. A single university or a cluster of colleges becomes the economic and social heart of the town. In Roorkee, it is the Indian Institute of Technology (originally the Thomason College of Civil Engineering). In Aligarh, it is Aligarh Muslim University. Varanasi is home to Banaras Hindu University, while Prayagraj hosts the University of Allahabad. Pilani, a much smaller town in Rajasthan, grew around the Birla Institute of Technology and Science.

These towns share several common features:

  • The educational institution is the largest employer, drawing faculty, staff, and service workers.
  • The town's infrastructure — housing, transport, markets — develops primarily to serve the student and academic population.
  • A distinct intellectual and cultural atmosphere emerges, often with libraries, research centres, and student文化活动.
  • Many such towns began as small, quiet places and transformed only after the educational institution was established. …
