Medieval Towns
About a hundred of India's existing towns trace their origin to the medieval period. Most of these towns grew as headquarters of principalities and kingdoms. They were essentially fort towns, often built on the ruins of older, ancient settlements.
Important examples include Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Agra, and Nagpur.
The British and other Europeans developed a number of towns in India. They first established their foothold on coastal locations, developing trading ports such as Surat, Daman, Goa, and Pondicherry. …
