Types of International Trade
Types of International Trade
International trade is not a single, uniform activity. It can be structured in different ways depending on how many countries are involved and the nature of their agreements. The textbook classifies it into two fundamental types based on the number of trading partners.
Bilateral Trade
This is the simplest form, involving exactly two countries. The two nations enter into a direct agreement to trade specified commodities with each other.
For example, Country A might agree to supply a certain raw material to Country B, and in return, Country B agrees to purchase a different specified item from Country A. The trade is a two-way, negotiated exchange between the pair.
Multilateral Trade
As the name suggests, this type involves many trading countries simultaneously. A single country can trade with a number of other countries under a broader framework, rather than having separate, one-on-one deals with each. …
