Part (a): India's sea ports are trade gateways — about 95% of foreign trade by volume passes through them, they carry cheap bulk cargo, and major ports like JNPT, Kandla and Visakhapatnam anchor coastal industry.

Part (b): Satellites are a communication medium in their own right (telephone, TV, internet via INSAT/GSAT) and also regulate other systems through weather, remote-sensing and navigation services.

Part (a)

India's peninsular shape and a coastline exceeding 7,500 km make the sea its natural window to the world, and its sea ports are the physical gateways through which international trade flows.

They handle the overwhelming share of trade. About 95% of India's foreign trade by volume, and roughly 70% by value, moves through its sea ports. No other mode of transport can match sea transport for moving very large quantities of goods over long distances at low cost.

They serve the bulk-cargo economy. India imports huge volumes of crude oil, petroleum products, coal, fertilisers and machinery, and exports iron ore, textiles, garments, engineering goods, chemicals and agricultural produce. Because ships can carry such cargo cheaply, ports keep Indian goods competitive abroad and imports affordable at home.

A network of major ports. India has a chain of major ports around its coast — on the west: Kandla (Deendayal), Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru (Nhava Sheva, the country's largest container port), Marmagao, New Mangalore and Cochin; on the east: Tuticorin, Chennai, Ennore, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata with its outport Haldia — supported by numerous minor ports. …
