Co-operative farming begins when a group of farmers voluntarily pool their resources — land, labour, capital, or machinery — by forming a co-operative society. The goal is to make farming more efficient and profitable. A critical point to understand is that individual farms do not merge or disappear; each farmer retains ownership of their own land. The co-operative effort is about how farming is organised and managed, not about giving up private property.
The co-operative society acts as a collective support system for its member farmers. It helps them procure all important inputs of farming — seeds, fertilisers, pesticides, and equipment — at lower costs through bulk purchasing. It also helps sell the farm products at the most favourable terms in the market, avoiding exploitation by middlemen.
