Part (a): The Harappan drainage system — covered, sloping, brick-lined drains connected to every house with cleaning manholes — proves that the cities were planned in advance under a civic authority.

Part (b): Seals and sealings were used mainly for trade and administration, marking ownership, authenticating goods and preventing tampering.

Part (a)

Town planning is not just about straight streets; it is about thinking of sanitation and maintenance before building. The Harappan drainage system shows exactly this forethought.

  1. Universal house connections. In cities such as Mohenjo-daro and Lothal almost every house had a bathing area or toilet whose waste water flowed out into a drain in the street. Provision on this scale means the city was designed around drainage.
  2. Covered, sloping brick channels. The street drains were built of baked bricks set carefully and given a gentle slope so water kept moving; they were covered with bricks or stone slabs so they did not smell or become a hazard.
  3. Manholes and cleaning access. At intervals the covers could be lifted (inspection holes/manholes) so blockages could be cleared without digging up the street; some drains had small sumps where solids settled.
  4. Soak-pits where needed. Where a house stood too high or too far to join a street drain, its waste ran into a brick-lined soak-pit that let water seep away while trapping solids — showing rules that were adapted to the terrain.
  5. Drains follow the planned streets. The drains ran under or along the streets, which were laid out in a broadly grid pattern; the network had to be mapped and the drains laid before the houses were built and connected. …
