The Vijayanagara Empire passed through four successive dynasties — Sangama (founders, canal builders), Saluva (military consolidators), Tuluva (Krishnadeva Raya's golden age), and Aravidu (the final, declining phase) — each leaving distinct administrative and infrastructural legacies.

The Vijayanagara Empire, founded in 1336, was not ruled by a single unbroken lineage but by four distinct dynasties over its roughly three-century existence. Each dynasty contributed differently to the empire's military strength, irrigation infrastructure, cultural flowering, or survival in decline. Understanding these contributions helps us see how the empire evolved from a robust regional power to its eventual fragmentation after the Battle of Talikota in 1565.

The Sangama dynasty (1336–1485) were the founders. Harihara and Bukka, the brothers who established Vijayanagara, belonged to this line. Their most celebrated infrastructural achievement was the construction of the Hiriya canal, a major irrigation project that tapped the Tungabhadra river to sustain agriculture in the arid Deccan. This canal symbolized the dynasty's commitment to agrarian prosperity and state-building through hydraulic engineering — a theme that runs through much of Vijayanagara's history.

The Saluva dynasty (1485–1505) was brief but crucial. Saluva Narasimha usurped power during a period of internal weakness and external threat. His primary contribution was strengthening the military apparatus of the empire, reasserting control over rebellious provinces and fending off Bahmani incursions. The Saluvas stabilized the empire but did not last long; power soon passed to their able generals.

Note

The Saluva interregnum is often seen as a military holding operation — they arrested the empire's decline but did not initiate a cultural or economic renaissance. …
