The 1980 mid-term Lok Sabha elections were triggered by the collapse of the Janata Party government due to internal factionalism and the inability of its leaders to provide a stable administration.

The story of the 1980 mid-term elections begins not in 1980, but in 1977. That year, the Janata Party had swept to power with a massive mandate, ending the Emergency and defeating Indira Gandhi’s Congress. They had united against a common enemy, but once in power, they had no common vision.

The first and most decisive reason for the mid-term elections was the chronic internal factionalism within the Janata Party. The government was never a single, coherent unit. This dispute tore the party apart, with some leaders demanding a clear break from the RSS and others defending it. By 1979, the government had lost all credibility. It could not pass legislation, it could not manage the economy, and it could not even hold itself together.
