Understanding Stress Through Its Signs
Stress does not announce itself the same way in everyone. The way you respond to a stressful situation is shaped by your personality, your early upbringing, and the life experiences you have had. Because each person has their own unique pattern of stress response, the warning signs — and how strongly they show up — can differ from one individual to another.
Some people know their own pattern well. They can sense how deep the problem is by paying attention to the nature and severity of their symptoms or by noticing changes in their own behaviour. These symptoms fall into three broad categories: physical, emotional, and behavioural. Any one of them can signal a degree of stress that, if left unresolved, may lead to serious consequences.
Physical Symptoms
The body often reacts before the mind fully registers the strain. Common physical signs include stomach upset, headaches, and backaches. Difficulties with sleep — either sleeping too little or too much — and changes in eating habits are also frequent. In some cases, people may misuse drugs as a way to cope.
Emotional Symptoms
Emotionally, stress can show up as worry, anxiety, fear, or depression. Extreme mood swings and emotional outbursts are common. A person may also experience low self-esteem, which further weakens their ability to handle challenges.
Behavioural Symptoms
Behavioural changes are often the most visible to others. These include lack of concentration, memory loss, and poor decision-making. Inconsistency in work or studies, irregular attendance and poor timekeeping, and a failure to plan for the long term are all warning signs. Some people show frantic bursts of energy, while others become withdrawn or erratic.
