Feeding and eating disorders are a group of conditions of special interest to young people. A disturbed perception of one's own body — a distorted body image — is closely linked to them, most directly in anorexia nervosa, where the misperception itself drives the disordered eating.
The three forms of eating disorder
1. Anorexia nervosa
- The individual has a distorted body image that leads her/him to see herself/himself as overweight.
- The person often refuses to eat, exercises compulsively, and develops unusual habits such as refusing to eat in front of others.
- As a result s/he may lose large amounts of weight and even starve to death.
2. Bulimia nervosa
- The individual may eat excessive amounts of food and then purge the body of it by using medicines such as laxatives or diuretics, or by vomiting.
- The person often feels disgusted and ashamed while bingeing, and is relieved of tension and negative emotions after purging.
3. Binge eating
- There are frequent episodes of out-of-control eating.
- The individual tends to eat at a higher speed than normal and continues eating until s/he feels uncomfortably full.
