A status symbol is not just a fancy object — it is a piece of social language. When you see someone wearing a particular watch, driving a certain car, or living in a specific neighbourhood, you instantly make assumptions about their income, their taste, and their place in the social hierarchy. That is the core idea: a status symbol is anything that communicates rank without the person having to say a word.
The concept works because societies agree, often without formal discussion, that certain things are “above” others. A silk robe in Mughal India, a toga with a purple stripe in ancient Rome, a corner office in a modern corporation — each of these carries a message that the owner belongs to a particular tier. The symbol itself might be expensive, rare, or simply associated with a group that is admired or feared.
Status symbols are not always material. In some circles, knowing obscure literature, speaking a certain dialect, or having a particular accent can function as a status symbol — it signals education and cultural capital rather than money.

This is why status symbols are especially important in large, anonymous societies where people meet strangers often and need a fast way to size each other up.
But status symbols are not fixed. They change over time and across cultures. What signals high status in one era may become ordinary or even embarrassing in another. For example, a deep tan was once a mark of the working class who laboured outdoors, while pale skin signalled the leisure of the rich. Today, in many places, a tan can signal the ability to afford holidays in sunny destinations — the meaning has flipped. …
