An example of an activity that is always classified as financing in a Cash Flow Statement is the issue of shares or debentures (or any borrowing/repayment of long-term funds).

Why This Classification is Fixed

The Cash Flow Statement (AS 3 / Ind AS 7) divides all cash flows into three activities: Operating, Investing, and Financing. The key to classification lies in the nature of the transaction, not its frequency or purpose.

Financing activities are defined as those that result in changes in the size and composition of the equity capital and borrowings of the entity. In simple terms, these are transactions with the providers of funds — the owners (shareholders) and long-term lenders (debenture holders, banks for long-term loans).

The issue of shares is the most fundamental financing activity. When a company issues equity shares, it is raising capital from its owners. This directly increases the equity base of the company. There is no scenario where issuing shares could be considered an operating or investing activity — it is always a financing inflow.

Similarly, issuing debentures (long-term debt instruments) or taking a long-term loan from a bank is always a financing inflow. Repaying these borrowings or buying back shares is always a financing outflow.

Watch out

Common Mistake

Students sometimes confuse interest paid on a loan or debenture with the principal amount of the loan itself. While the repayment of the principal of a loan is always a financing outflow, the interest paid on that loan is classified as an operating activity (under AS 3) or as per the company's policy (financing or operating under Ind AS 7). The question asks about the activity (the transaction itself), not the associated expense.
