Strategic decisions are the major, long-term choices taken by top management about the broad direction and scope of the business. The NCERT chapter identifies three: whether to continue in the same line of business, whether to combine new lines of activity with the existing business, and whether to seek a dominant position in the same market.

A strategy is a comprehensive plan prepared by top management for accomplishing the organisation's objectives. It provides the broad contours of the business and refers to future decisions that define the organisation's direction and scope in the long run. Because a strategy shapes the organisation's identity in its environment, the decisions taken while formulating it are called strategic decisions — and they are always made in the light of the business environment and competition.

Whenever a strategy is formulated, changes in the economic, political, social, legal and technological environment have to be taken into account, since these affect the organisation's strategy. Strategic decisions are therefore long-term, taken at the top level, and carry major consequences for the organisation as a whole.

As the CBSE Class 12 Business Studies Planning chapter states, the major strategic decisions a business organisation takes include decisions such as:

  1. Whether to continue in the same line of business — staying committed to the business the organisation already operates in.

  2. Whether to combine new lines of activity with the existing business — adding new products, markets or activities alongside what the organisation already does.

  3. Whether to seek a dominant position in the same market — deciding to acquire a leading, commanding position within the market in which the organisation already competes. …
