  1. The formal sector is registered, law-governed employment with contracts and social security; the informal sector is unregistered work with no contract, no benefits and low security.
  2. Using environmental resources faster than they regenerate causes irreversible depletion, loss of ecosystem services, higher economic costs, intergenerational inequity and conflict — the opposite of sustainable development.

Distinguish between the formal and informal sector of employment with suitable examples.

The formal sector covers enterprises registered with the government where employment is governed by labour laws. Workers have written contracts, fixed hours, minimum wages and social security (provident fund, pension, ESI cover, gratuity, paid leave), plus job security and the right to unionise.

The informal sector consists of unregistered, small-scale units outside the legal framework. Work is largely undocumented — no written contract, irregular hours, wages often below the minimum, no social security, and workers can be hired or fired at will.
