Part (a): (i) IT drives sustainable development and food security through precision farming, e-markets and e-governance; (ii) a self-employed worker owns and runs her own economic activity. Part (b): (i) the formal sector is registered with legal and social security while the informal sector is unregistered and unprotected; (ii) Worker Population Ratio = (workers ÷ total population) × 100.

Part (a)

(i) IT for sustainable development and food security

Sustainable development means meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs; food security means all people, at all times, having physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food. IT links the two:

  • Precision agriculture: GPS-guided equipment, soil and weather sensors, drones and satellite imagery apply water, fertiliser and pesticide exactly where needed, cutting waste, cost and environmental damage while raising yields.
  • Efficient supply chains: platforms like e-NAM (National Agriculture Market) connect farmers to buyers, give real-time prices and improve storage/logistics, reducing large farm-to-market food losses.
  • Climate resilience: IT-based early-warning systems (SMS alerts for floods, drought, cyclones) let farmers protect crops and livestock.
  • E-governance: transparent digital records deliver subsidies, crop insurance and PDS entitlements with fewer leakages.
Note

The gains require digital literacy, electricity and affordable connectivity; where these are absent the benefits are uneven.

(ii) Self-employed worker

A self-employed worker owns and operates her own enterprise or works independently, earning directly from that activity rather than a fixed wage/salary, and bearing the risk of profit or loss. …
