Economics · Ch 18 — Environment and Sustainable Development
Conclusion
Conclusion
Economic development, aimed at producing more goods and services for a growing population, steadily increases the pressure on the environment. In the early stages of development the demand for environmental resources fell short of their supply. Today the position is reversed: demand for environmental resources has risen while their supply is limited by overuse and misuse.
The way forward is sustainable development — a form of development that keeps environmental damage to a minimum and meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Only development guided by concern for those who come after us can be made to last.
