State and explain any two changes in India's occupational structure during British rule.

1. Rising dependence on agriculture. Before colonial rule the workforce was spread across agriculture, handicrafts and trade. Under the British the agricultural share rose sharply (about 70–75%). The main cause was de-industrialisation: heavy tariffs on Indian goods entering Britain and a flood of cheap machine-made British textiles destroyed indigenous handicrafts. Displaced artisans and weavers, with no modern industry to absorb them, returned to the land. This increased pressure on agriculture, producing disguised unemployment and stagnant rural incomes.

2. Stagnation of the industrial (secondary) sector. Although some modern industry appeared (cotton and jute mills), largely to serve British export interests, it absorbed only a small share of the labour force even by 1947. The colonial government actively discouraged Indian industrialisation to protect British manufacturers, so the secondary sector never grew enough to employ the rising population, and the tertiary sector expanded only slowly — leaving an over-burdened primary sector and an under-developed secondary sector. …
