Frost portrays the rural poor running a small stand, pleading in vain for a share of city money, neglected by indifferent motorists and preyed upon by hollow welfare schemes.

In "A Roadside Stand," Frost depicts poor country folk who have built "a little new shed" before their "little old house... at the edge of the road." Their stand "too pathetically pled" — not for a "dole of bread" but for "some city money" to let their "being expand." Yet they are utterly neglected. The "polished traffic passed with a mind ahead," glancing aside only when "out of sorts / At having the landscape marred with the artless paint" of their crude signs.
