Central Idea and Summary

Central Idea

The central idea of the poem is that beauty is a permanent, healing source of joy. A beautiful thing gives us happiness that never wears out; its loveliness actually increases over time and never passes into nothingness. In a world full of suffering, disappointment and gloom, beauty is what sustains the human spirit, reconciles us to life, and binds us to the earth. Keats celebrates both the beauty of nature and the beauty preserved in art and story as an 'endless fountain' of immortal joy poured out for us from heaven.

Summary

The passage opens with its famous declaration: a thing of beauty is a joy that lasts for ever. Keats explains what he means -- the loveliness of a beautiful thing does not diminish; on the contrary, it keeps growing, and it will never fade into nothing. Rather than passing away, beauty stays with us and continues to give delight.

Beauty, Keats says, does us practical good. It provides us with a quiet resting place, giving us untroubled sleep filled with sweet dreams, and restoring our health and calm. He acknowledges that we often feel despondent; that there is a shortage of noble, generous people; that we pass through gloomy days and along unhealthy, darkened paths full of obstacles. Life, in short, has more than its share of sorrow and difficulty.

And yet, he insists, even in the midst of all this gloom, some form of beauty always appears to remove the heavy pall of sadness from our spirits and lift our darkened mood. Beauty is the reliable relief that comes to rescue us from despair.

He then lists the beautiful things that work this magic: the sun and the moon; old and young trees that spread a green shelter over simple sheep; the daffodils blooming in their green surroundings; clear, cool streams that make a shady, refreshing channel for themselves against the hot season; and the thick growth of fragrant musk-roses in the heart of the forest. …
