Pick a role model, then prepare focused interview questions spanning their journey, struggles, values and advice.

To prepare a television interview, first choose a role model and think about what viewers would most like to learn from them. Suppose the role model is a famous sportsperson (like Sophie's hero Danny Casey grown into a real interviewee). The interview should move in a logical order — from their past, to their present success, to lessons for the future. Sample points and questions:

  • Could you tell us about your childhood and family background?
  • Who or what first inspired you to take up this field?
  • What were the biggest struggles or setbacks on your way up, and how did you overcome them?
  • Which achievement are you proudest of, and why?
  • How do you cope with failure, criticism and the pressure of fame?
  • What does a typical day of training and discipline look like for you?
  • What advice would you give to young people who dream of following in your footsteps? …
