'Journey to the End of the Earth' is a successful reflective travelogue because Doshi uses a real voyage from Madras to Antarctica as a springboard for meditation on deep time, human insignificance and climate change, carried by lyrical imagery and the insight that "everything does indeed connect."

The essay is far more than a record of sights. Its structure is that of a reflective travelogue: an outward physical voyage — over 100 hours by car, aeroplane and ship, crossing nine time zones to "the coldest, driest, windiest continent in the world" — that repeatedly turns inward into thought. Doshi's controlling method is contrast of scale. Against Gondwana's 650-million-year history she sets human civilisation's "paltry 12,000 years — barely a few seconds on the geological clock," so the reader feels how recent and small humankind is. …
