The Message of the Story

The message of the lesson is that to understand the world's past, present and future, and to grasp how urgently it must be protected, we need to witness places like Antarctica for ourselves. The continent is a single spot where the deep history of the planet, the fragility of its living systems and the early symptoms of climate change all become visible at once. By reading the ice, the fossils and the tiny organisms of the far south, we can see where the Earth came from and sense where it is going.

Woven into this is a call to action addressed above all to the young. Direct experience of a threatened environment awakens a sense of responsibility that no lecture can match, and it is the coming generation — the students Geoff Green deliberately takes south — who must carry that responsibility forward.
