Zitkala-Sa describes racial-cultural discrimination and resists it physically and through her later writing, while Bama describes caste untouchability and resists it through education — both refusing to accept the indignities imposed on them.

The two writers describe very different systems of oppression. In Part I, Zitkala-Sa faces racial and cultural discrimination at a boarding school, where Native American children are stripped of their own ways — marched by bells, dressed in stiff clothes, and, most painfully, forced to have their long hair shingled. Since in her culture short hair marked mourners and shingled hair cowards, this is a deliberate erasure of her identity. Her resistance is immediate and physical: she declares, "No, I will not submit! I will struggle first!", hides under a bed, and when found is dragged out "kicking and scratching wildly."
