Gondwana was a huge ancient supercontinent that included what are today South America, Africa, India, Australia and Antarctica; its gradual break-up set these landmasses drifting apart to their present positions.

In Journey to the End of the Earth, Tishani Doshi recalls that around six hundred and fifty million years ago there was no separate India, Africa or Antarctica — they were all part of one enormous southern landmass called Gondwana. It was a warm, forested world that flourished long before human beings, and even before the age of the great mammals, existed.

Over an immense span of time this supercontinent slowly broke apart. Driven by the movement of the Earth's plates, the fragments drifted away from one another: India moved northward, Africa and South America separated, and Antarctica settled over the South Pole, where it became the cold, ice-covered continent we know today. …
