To do this activity, cut out about twenty cartoons — political and social — from newspapers and magazines in any language, covering well-known leaders, celebrities or current events. Paste them in a scrapbook and, for each, note who or what is being satirised and what point the cartoonist is making. Then focus on the interplay of words and pictures: how the exaggerated drawing (a huge nose, a tiny figure, an animal likeness) caricatures the person, and how the caption or speech-bubble adds the sting that the picture alone cannot. …
