The story is fundamentally about the trap of material benefit that most human beings are prone to fall into — the lure of riches, comfort and easy gain that, like the bait in a rattrap, tempts a person and then closes in on them. The peddler's theft of the thirty kronor is the clearest instance of this trap springing shut.
