The Message of the Story

The message about escape

The first strand of the message is that the stress and insecurity of modern life drive people to seek refuge. Charley lives in a century marked by war, fear and constant worry, and his mind reaches for the Galesburg of the 1890s as a place of peace. His wish to buy tickets there is really the wish of many ordinary people to flee an age that leaves them feeling unsafe. Finney treats this longing with sympathy, presenting escape not as foolishness but as a natural human response to a frightening world. Sam's diagnosis - a waking-dream wish fulfilment - puts the same idea in psychological terms: when the outer world cannot be mended, the inner mind builds a door out of it.
