Ch 14Semiconductor Electronics: Materials, Devices and Simple Circuits — Class 12 Physics, concept-first.

The story of modern electronics begins with a simple question: how do we control the flow of electrons? Every electronic circuit, from a pocket radio to a supercomputer, relies on devices that can regulate this flow with precision.

14.2

Classification of Metals, Conductors and Semiconductors

Solids are broadly divided into three categories based on their electrical conductivity or resistivity .

14.3

Intrinsic Semiconductor

A pure semiconductor, with no deliberate impurities added, is called an intrinsic semiconductor. The most common examples are silicon (Si) and germanium (Ge).

14.4

Extrinsic Semiconductor

Pure intrinsic semiconductors — silicon and germanium — have very low conductivity at room temperature.

14.5

p-n Junction

A p-n junction is the fundamental building block of almost all semiconductor devices — diodes, transistors, solar cells, LEDs, and integrated circuits.

14.5.1

p-n Junction Formation

A p-n junction is not made by gluing two separate pieces of semiconductor together. Instead, we begin with a thin wafer of p-type silicon (p-Si).

14.6

Semiconductor Diode

A semiconductor diode is simply a p-n junction equipped with metallic contacts on both ends, allowing an external voltage to be applied across it.

14.6.1

p-n Junction Diode under Forward Bias

When we connect a battery to a p-n junction diode so that the p-side is at a higher potential than the n-side, we say the diode is forward biased.

14.6.2

p-n Junction Diode under Reverse Bias

When the external voltage is connected so that the n-side is positive and the p-side is negative, the diode is said to be in reverse bias.

14.7

Application of Junction Diode as a Rectifier

A junction diode's V-I characteristic reveals a one-way street: current flows freely only when the diode is forward biased.

Summary

- Energy bands: In solids, discrete atomic levels broaden into bands — the valence band (filled with valence electrons) and the conduction band (empty or partially filled).

Points to Ponder

1. The conduction band minimum and valence band maximum are delocalised across the entire crystal — they are not pinned to any single atom or location.
