Starting from the pass book credit balance ₹20,000, add the ₹400 wrongly debited to the current account, and deduct the un-presented cheque (₹500) and the cheque that was not presented yet recorded twice (₹1,000).

Balance as per cash book = ₹18,900 (matches the NCERT key).

Treatment. (i) A cheque of ₹400 drawn on the savings account was wrongly shown/debited in the current account passbook, lowering it in error, so the cash book is higher — add ₹400.

(ii) Of the two cheques issued (₹300 and ₹500), only ₹300 was presented; the ₹500 cheque is issued but not presented — the passbook is higher — deduct ₹500.

(iii) A ₹500 cheque was not presented (passbook higher, deduct ₹500) and was also recorded twice in the cash book (cash book understated by ₹500, deduct ₹500) — together deduct ₹1,000.
