Market equilibrium occurs where qdemand=qsupplyq_{demand}=q_{supply}; solve the linear equation for pp, then substitute back for qq.

Equilibrium condition: qdemand(p)=qsupply(p)q_{demand}(p)=q_{supply}(p). Solve the resulting linear equation in pp, then substitute into either curve to get the equilibrium quantity qq.

  1. Set the two given curves equal:

−10p+1000=0.2p+2986-10p+1000 = 0.2p+2986

  1. Collect pp-terms on one side and constants on the other:

1000−2986=0.2p+10p1000-2986 = 0.2p+10p

−1986=10.2p-1986 = 10.2p

  1. Solve for pp:

p=−198610.2=−19860102=−331017≈−194.71p=\frac{-1986}{10.2}=\frac{-19860}{102}=\frac{-3310}{17}\approx -194.71

  1. Substitute pp into qdemand=−10p+1000q_{demand}=-10p+1000:

q=−10(−331017)+1000=3310017+1000=33100+1700017=5010017≈2947.06q=-10\left(\frac{-3310}{17}\right)+1000=\frac{33100}{17}+1000=\frac{33100+17000}{17}=\frac{50100}{17}\approx2947.06

  1. Self-check using qsupply=0.2p+2986q_{supply}=0.2p+2986: q=0.2(−331017)+2986=−66217+2986≈−38.94+2986=2947.06 ✓q=0.2\left(\frac{-3310}{17}\right)+2986=\frac{-662}{17}+2986\approx-38.94+2986=2947.06\ \checkmark …
