A 36 m ×\times 27 m pool with depth varying uniformly from 3 m to 4 m has a capacity of 34,02,000 litres.

When a pool's depth varies uniformly (linearly) from one end to the other, its cross-section is a trapezium and Volume == (average depth) ×\times length ×\times width. 1 m3=10001\text{ m}^3=1000 litres.

  1. Shallow-end depth =3=3 m, deep-end depth =4=4 m; since depth varies uniformly, average depth =3+42=3.5=\dfrac{3+4}{2}=3.5 m.
  2. Volume == width ×\times length ×\times average depth =36×27×3.5=36\times27\times3.5.
  3. 36×27=97236\times27=972.
  4. 972×3.5=972×3+972×0.5=2916+486=3402 m3972\times3.5=972\times3+972\times0.5=2916+486=3402\text{ m}^3. …
