A relation RR from AA to BB is a function iff every element of the domain has exactly one image.

RR is a function   ⟺  \iff for every xx in the domain there is a unique yy with (x,y)∈R(x,y)\in R (no element of the domain repeats with two different second coordinates).

  1. (i) R={(2,1),(3,2),(4,1),(5,2),(3,3)}R=\{(2,1),(3,2),(4,1),(5,2),(3,3)\}. The domain elements are 2,3,4,52,3,4,5. The element 33 occurs twice, as (3,2)(3,2) and (3,3)(3,3) — two different images 22 and 33 for the same x=3x=3. Hence RR is not a function.
  2. (ii) R={(1,2),(2,3),(3,4),(4,5)}R=\{(1,2),(2,3),(3,4),(4,5)\}. Domain ={1,2,3,4}=\{1,2,3,4\}, each element appears exactly once as a first coordinate with a single image. Hence RR is a function. …
