The muscular system is every muscle in the body working to produce movement; structurally, it splits into skeletal, smooth and cardiac muscle, distinguished by striation and voluntary/involuntary control.

The muscular system covers all the muscle tissue in the body, and its basic job is movement — "the movement in our body is either done by the relaxation or the contraction of muscles," whether that movement is voluntary (walking, running) or involuntary (the heart pumping blood).

Structurally, the chapter classifies muscle tissue into three types:

Skeletal muscle makes up about 40% of body weight, is attached to the skeletal system by tendons, and is called striated because its striations are visible under a microscope. It is voluntary — we control it at will — and can contract rapidly, though it tires if contracted for long.

Smooth muscle has elongated, spindle-shaped cells with no visible striations. It is involuntary, contracts much more slowly than the other two types, and is found mostly in hollow organs (stomach, urinary bladder, respiratory passages), as well as in the eyes and skin. …
