Importance of Traditional Sports and Regional Games
Regional and traditional sports have always mattered for the development of the individual and of society. They gave people a sense of belonging and achievement and supported their physical and mental health. Their importance lies in four aspects.
1. Physical aspect
We all know the saying "survival of the fittest." From ancient times there was a constant need to be physically fit - to face harsh climates, to search for food, or to fight an opponent. Traditional games gave people the edge and kept them fit to face any adversity. For example, Thang-ta, which originated in Manipur, is an ancient martial art played with sword and spear.
2. Social aspect
Man is a social animal with a constant need for companionship. Many games were invented to give a general sense of purpose and to promote social and peer interaction. They help children from a very young age to enhance their social skills and form relationships.
3. Psychological aspect
Our ancestors understood early that physical activity improves and fulfils psychological needs. Research now shows that physical activity enhances self-confidence, self-esteem, motivation, personality and leadership skills. Traditional games gave people a platform to showcase their talent and win the recognition from peers and society that most people desire.
