Plasmodesmata connect adjoining cells through the wall, the middle lamella cements adjacent cell walls together, and the secondary wall is an extra thickened layer laid down inside the primary wall after growth ends.

These three terms all concern the structure of the plant cell wall and how cells relate to one another across it.

  • Plasmodesmata (a): a plant cell wall is not a completely sealed boundary — it is perforated in places by extremely fine channels, and through these channels run thin strands of cytoplasm called plasmodesmata, physically linking the living contents (protoplasts) of two neighbouring cells. In a line drawing, this would be shown as two adjacent rectangular cells sharing a common wall, with a narrow gap in that wall through which a thin connecting strand passes, joining the cytoplasm of one cell directly to that of the other. This continuity allows substances and signals to move between cells without crossing two separate outer membranes each time.
  • Middle lamella (b): when a new cell forms by division, the very first material laid down between the two daughter cells is a thin layer composed mainly of pectic substances, which cements the walls of the two future cells together at their shared boundary. In a line drawing, it would appear as a single thin line running down the centre of the shared wall, with the (thicker) primary wall of each individual cell built up on either side of it. It functions essentially as an adhesive layer holding neighbouring cells to one another. …
