Darwin lacked a mechanism for how variations arise and are inherited; Mendel’s work would have provided that missing piece, allowing Darwin to explain the origin of variations with far greater clarity.

Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection was a monumental leap in biology, but it had a glaring weakness: he could not explain where variations come from or how they are passed on. He knew that individuals in a population differ, and that nature selects the fittest, but the source of those differences remained a mystery. Darwin spoke of “blending inheritance” — the idea that offspring are a mix of both parents — which, as his critics pointed out, would dilute any new variation in just a few generations. Without a mechanism for preserving variation, natural selection seemed mathematically impossible.

This is where Mendel’s work, published in 1866, would have been revolutionary for Darwin. Mendel showed that traits are inherited as discrete units (what we now call genes), and that these units do not blend but remain separate, passing intact from generation to generation. He also demonstrated that variations arise through the recombination of these units during sexual reproduction — the shuffling of alleles in gamete formation. If Darwin had known this, he would have immediately seen that variation is not a rare, random accident but a constant, predictable outcome of inheritance.

Note

Mendel’s laws of segregation and independent assortment explain how new combinations of existing traits appear in offspring, even when parents show no such variation themselves. This is the very raw material natural selection acts upon. …
