Monetary incentives satisfy economic needs through money; non-monetary incentives satisfy psychological/social needs without money.

Five differences between monetary and non-monetary motivation:

  1. Meaning — Monetary incentives are rewards given in money or measurable in money. Non-monetary incentives are rewards that are not financial in nature.

  2. Form — Monetary: pay, bonus, profit-sharing, allowances. Non-monetary: status, recognition, job security, promotion, good working conditions.

  3. Needs satisfied — Monetary incentives satisfy economic/physiological needs; non-monetary incentives satisfy social, esteem and self-actualisation needs.

  4. Suitability — Monetary incentives work better for lower-level employees whose basic needs are unmet; non-monetary incentives work better for higher-level employees.
