Monetary incentives use money to meet economic needs; non-monetary incentives use non-financial rewards to meet psychological needs.

Five differences between monetary and non-monetary motivation:

  1. Meaning — Monetary incentives are rewards given in money or measurable in money; non-monetary incentives are rewards not financial in nature.

  2. Form — Monetary: pay, bonus, profit-sharing, allowances. Non-monetary: status, recognition, job security, promotion, good working conditions.

  3. Needs satisfied — Monetary incentives satisfy economic/physiological needs; non-monetary incentives satisfy social, esteem and self-actualisation needs.

  4. Suitability — Monetary incentives suit lower-level employees whose basic needs are unmet; non-monetary incentives suit higher-level employees.
