Voluntary unemployment = unwilling to work at the going wage; involuntary unemployment = willing but unable to find work.

Unemployment is of two broad kinds:

  1. Voluntary unemployment — A person is voluntarily unemployed when he is able to work and work is available, but he is not willing to work at the prevailing wage rate (perhaps he finds the wage too low, or he has other means of income). Such unemployment is by the person's own choice.
  2. Involuntary unemployment — A person is involuntarily unemployed when he is both willing and able to work at the prevailing wage rate, but still cannot find a job. This is unemployment against the person's wish, caused by a deficiency of aggregate demand in the economy. …
