Interest rate and investment move in opposite directions — a lower rate raises investment, a higher rate lowers it.

Investment (especially induced investment by firms) depends on a comparison between the expected rate of return (the marginal efficiency of capital) and the rate of interest at which funds are borrowed.

When the rate of interest falls, the cost of borrowing funds falls, so more investment projects become profitable (their expected return now exceeds the lower interest cost); investment therefore increases. When the rate of interest rises, borrowing becomes costlier, fewer projects are profitable, and investment falls.
