Marginal product (MP) is the addition to total product from one more unit of the variable factor; average product (AP) is total product per unit of the variable factor (AP = TP ÷ units). Their relationship:

  1. When MP is greater than AP — As long as the marginal product of the extra unit is above the average, it pulls the average up, so AP rises.
  2. When MP equals AP — At the point where MP = AP, the average product is at its maximum. The MP curve intersects (cuts) the AP curve from above exactly at the highest point of AP.
