Special Olympics groups athletes by age, gender and ability to ensure fair, meaningful competition among participants of similar skill levels.

The Special Olympics movement was founded on the principle that every individual with an intellectual disability deserves the chance to compete in sport — not as a token gesture, but in contests where they can genuinely test themselves against peers of comparable ability. Simply throwing all athletes together would produce lopsided matches: a 12-year-old girl who has just learned to dribble a basketball cannot fairly compete against a 28-year-old man who has played for years. The grouping system exists to make competition real.

Gender is included because of the physiological differences in muscle mass, bone density and cardiovascular capacity that emerge after puberty. Mixed-gender divisions would disadvantage female athletes in most events.

Ability is the heart of the system. Before competition, athletes submit qualifying scores or times from recent performances. Organizers use these results to create divisions in which the spread of ability is narrow — typically no more than 10–15 % difference between the fastest and slowest qualifier in a heat. This way every athlete has a realistic chance to place, and the competition remains suspenseful and motivating. …
