Transgenic animals carry a foreign gene deliberately inserted into their genome; they are produced mainly for biomedical research (disease models, gene function), to manufacture biological products (e.g., pharmaceutical proteins in milk), and to test the safety of vaccines/chemicals.

Transgenic animals are those animals whose genome (DNA) has been modified/manipulated by human intervention to introduce and express an extra, foreign gene (a 'transgene'), or by inactivating/modifying existing genes, using genetic engineering techniques. Well-known examples include transgenic mice, rats, rabbits, pigs, sheep, and cows.

Any three reasons why transgenic animals are produced:

  1. To study normal physiology and development: By introducing genes that get expressed at specific times, scientists can study how genes are regulated and how they affect normal body functions and development.

  2. To study disease: Transgenic animals can be specially designed to serve as models for studying human diseases (such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and Alzheimer's disease), allowing researchers to study the disease process and test new treatments more easily than in humans.
