Convergent evolution produces analogous structures — similar in function/form but different in origin — in unrelated organisms facing similar selection pressures.

Convergent evolution occurs when two or more unrelated species (with different evolutionary origins/ancestry), living in similar environments or facing similar functional demands, independently evolve similar structures or adaptations. These structures are similar in appearance/function but arise from different developmental/embryological origins, and are called analogous organs (as opposed to homologous organs, which arise from divergent evolution of a common ancestral structure).

Example:

  • The wings of insects (e.g. butterflies) and the wings of birds (e.g. sparrows) — both serve the same function of flight, and both are called wings, but they evolved independently from completely different structures/origins and have entirely different internal anatomy.
