Convergent evolution = unrelated organisms in similar environments independently develop similar (analogous) structures; e.g. wings of insects, birds and bats, or the streamlined bodies of sharks, penguins and dolphins.

Convergent evolution is the process in which different (unrelated) species living in similar environments/habitats independently evolve structures that look and function alike, even though they have different origins and internal structures. Such structures are called analogous organs, and this represents adaptive convergence toward a common function.

Examples:

  1. The wings of insects, birds and bats — all serve flight but have entirely different structural origins (analogous organs).
  2. The streamlined body and flippers of sharks (a fish), penguins (a bird) and dolphins/whales (mammals) — evolved independently for swimming in water.
  3. The eye of the octopus and the eye of a mammal — similar in appearance but of independent origin. …
