Microsporum causes ringworm (a fungal skin infection), not filariasis — which is caused by a parasitic worm, making option (c) the incorrect pairing.

When we study infectious diseases, understanding the relationship between specific pathogens and the illnesses they cause is fundamental to both diagnosis and treatment. Each class of pathogen — viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protozoans — has characteristic diseases associated with it, and mixing these up can lead to completely wrong therapeutic approaches.

Let's examine each pairing systematically.

Virus and common cold is a correct match. The common cold is caused by various viruses, most commonly rhinoviruses. These are RNA viruses that infect the upper respiratory tract, causing the familiar symptoms of sneezing, runny nose, and congestion. Viral infections like this don't respond to antibiotics, which is why the common cold simply has to run its course.

Salmonella and typhoid is also correct. Salmonella typhi is the bacterial pathogen responsible for typhoid fever, a serious systemic infection transmitted through contaminated food and water. This bacterium invades the intestinal lining and spreads through the bloodstream, causing sustained high fever, weakness, and abdominal pain. Being bacterial, typhoid can be treated with appropriate antibiotics.

Plasmodium and malaria is the classic example taught in every biology class. Plasmodium species (particularly P. vivax, P. falciparum, P. malariae, and P. ovale) are protozoan parasites transmitted by female Anopheles mosquitoes. The parasite has a complex life cycle involving both the mosquito vector and the human host, where it invades red blood cells and causes the characteristic cyclical fever pattern of malaria.
