Spermatogenesis converts diploid germ cells into four haploid sperm through mitotic multiplication, meiotic reduction, and spermiogenesis.

Spermatogenesis is the process of formation of haploid spermatozoa (sperm) from diploid germ cells (spermatogonia) inside the seminiferous tubules of the testis, beginning at puberty under the influence of GnRH, LH, FSH, and testosterone.

Process (ray diagram):

Spermatogonium (2n)
        ↓ (mitosis, multiplication)
Primary spermatocyte (2n)
        ↓ (Meiosis I)
Two secondary spermatocytes (n each)
        ↓ (Meiosis II)
Four spermatids (n each)
        ↓ (spermiogenesis — differentiation)
Four spermatozoa (n, motile sperm)
  • A spermatogonium first multiplies by mitosis to increase in number, and some enter meiosis as primary spermatocytes.
  • Each primary spermatocyte undergoes meiosis I (reductional division) to form two haploid secondary spermatocytes. …
