Fertilization (syngamy) is the fusion of haploid male and female gametes to restore the diploid chromosome number and form a zygote.

Fertilization is the process in which a male gamete (sperm) fuses with a female gamete (ovum/egg) to form a diploid zygote. In humans, fertilization normally occurs in the ampullary-isthmic junction of the fallopian tube (oviduct). Only one sperm (out of the many that reach the ovum) actually fuses with the secondary oocyte's plasma membrane; this triggers completion of the second meiotic division of the oocyte and prevents entry of additional sperm (polyspermy block).
