Infertility = inability to conceive despite regular unprotected intercourse; couples can be assisted by ART methods such as IVF, ZIFT, GIFT, and ICSI.

Infertility is defined as the inability of a couple to achieve conception and produce a child even after regular, unprotected sexual intercourse (usually over a period of about one to two years). It can result from a problem in either partner (or both) — such as physical, congenital, hormonal, functional, psychological, or immunological causes, or diseases and drug/treatment side-effects.

Since the 1970s, various Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) have been developed to help infertile couples have children. Any four such methods:

  1. In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) ('test-tube baby' programme): Ova from the wife/donor and sperm from the husband/donor are collected and induced to fuse (fertilise) outside the body, under laboratory conditions similar to the body. The resulting embryo (up to 8 blastomeres) is then transferred into the fallopian tube (ZIFT) or, if beyond the 8-blastomere stage, into the uterus (IUT), to continue development.

  2. Zygote Intra-Fallopian Transfer (ZIFT): The zygote or early embryo (up to 8 blastomeres) formed by IVF is transferred into the fallopian tube of the woman.
